In 2023, Cedars-Sinai achieved a milestone by administering CAR T-cell therapy to its 100th patient, Sixta Georgina Calderón Hernández, who was diagnosed with lymphoma. CAR T-cell therapy involves extracting a patient’s immune cells, engineering them to target cancer cells, and reinfusing them into the patient. This innovative approach offers an alternative to traditional bone marrow transplants, which can be more taxing physically.
Dr. Akil Merchant, co-director of the Lymphoma Program, emphasized that CAR T-cell therapy is particularly beneficial for patients whose cancers are unresponsive to conventional treatments. The therapy has shown promise, with significant remission rates; most patients remaining cancer-free nine to twelve months post-treatment are considered effectively cured.
The success of the CAR T program at Cedars-Sinai reflects its rapid growth since 2020, enhancing patient access to this advanced treatment. Currently, ongoing clinical research seeks to optimize patient selection and develop next-generation CAR T therapies, highlighting the program’s commitment to improving treatment efficacy. As the field of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation continues to evolve, these advancements in CAR T-cell therapy represent a significant leap forward in cancer treatment, potentially benefiting patients who might otherwise face limited options.
