The Smidt Heart Institute at Cedars-Sinai has received a prestigious three-star quality rating from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, marking it as one of the top heart surgery programs in the United States. This rating is the highest awarded by the organization, recognizing Cedars-Sinai’s excellence in patient care and low rates of surgical and post-surgical complications across various cardiac procedures.

The three-star rating is based on a comprehensive analysis of 1,567 adult cardiac surgeries performed from January 1, 2022, to December 31, 2024. Procedures evaluated include coronary artery bypass grafting, aortic valve replacement, and mitral valve repairs and replacements. The Society’s rating system, established in 1989, relies on voluntarily reported data from hospitals across the nation, underscoring the importance of transparency and quality measurement in cardiac care.

Dr. Joanna Chikwe, chair of the Department of Cardiac Surgery, highlighted that this rating reflects not only the surgical competence of the team but also their commitment to patient safety and quality outcomes across the spectrum of cardiac surgery. Additionally, the growth of the cardiac surgery team at Cedars-Sinai, as noted by Dr. Shlomo Melmed, emphasizes the integration of cutting-edge research and advanced surgical techniques that contribute to superior patient outcomes.

This rating is significant for heart transplant patients and donors, as it ensures the highest standards of care, potentially resulting in better patient outcomes and trust in the heart transplantation process. The recognition also reinforces the need for ongoing research and development in cardiac surgery to further enhance patient safety and surgical efficacy.
