Donegal organ donor families and grateful transplant recipients took part in a special service of remembrance and thanksgiving in Dublin over the weekend.
An estimated 1,600 people from all over Ireland and abroad gathered at Holy Child Church in Whitehall on Saturday for the Irish Kidney Association's 39th annual service.
Eilis Carlin, from Croghan, Co. Donegal, brought a photo of her son Tony, who was 25 at the time of his death in 2019.
She said: “The decision to donate his organs was easy because we knew we would follow his wishes. Four lives were saved.”
Seamie McDermott, of Ballybofey, said. Virgin Media TV News He received a kidney from a deceased donor 22 and a half years ago.
“Every morning I wake up and say a little prayer to my donor. If it wasn't for my donor, I wouldn't be here today,” Seamy said.
This unique service was an important opportunity for people of all faiths to remember loved ones who have passed away and whose lives were given to others as a gift. After the service, the organ donor's family viewed the names of the deceased donor's loved ones inscribed in the Book of Memoriam, the organ donor's record of honor.
