A Clare transplant recipient is urging people not to fear the prospect of becoming a donor.

It comes as new HSE figures show that 55,241 people in Ireland have opted out of voluntary organ donation.

Sharon Fitzgerald received a transplant in 1980 after suffering kidney failure.

The Newmarket On Fergus woman, who’s on the Irish Kidney Association’s Board of Directors, says while people are entitled to make their choice, it’s important to challenge common falsehoods about the process.
