Waterford Ika Branch Highlights The Importance Of Organ Donation On

Today is World Kidney Day.

This year, the focus is on the close relationship between heart disease and chronic kidney disease.

Ray Harrigan, chairman of the Waterford Irish Kidney Society branch, spoke to WLR News and stressed the continued importance of organ donation.

“There are currently 669 people in Ireland waiting for an organ transplant and we are appealing to families to discuss organ donation with their families.”

In response to the challenges of the coronavirus, local chapters are gradually returning to normal operations. Organ donors and patients receiving dialysis have been among those most at risk throughout the pandemic.

“We’re going out fundraising again,” Ray says.

“The Waterford branch has around 20 active members and we hold monthly meetings to discuss fundraising, Waterford’s dialysis unit and how we can help and support the unit with non-medical issues. Let’s talk.”

The upcoming Bucket Collection will be held at Aldi in Kingsmeadow on March 17th and 18th.

“If you want to donate to us, everything stays local,” Ray added.
