Ireland's first double lung and liver transplant patient said he plans to travel once he has fully recovered.
Robert Sheehan, 29, from Asketon, Co Limerick, was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis as a baby and underwent a complex operation in June.
Robert Sheehan's lung collapsed three times last year, in June, September and December.
It was his third time at the Mater Hospital and he would spend the next eight months there.
“That's when the meetings started with doctors, surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses and a multidisciplinary team across the hospital,” Robert said.
Robert underwent a double lung and liver transplant in June, the first of its kind in Ireland.
Dr. Lars Nelke of Mater Hospital says a lot of planning had to be done in advance.
“All the major components were in place and ready to go, but the big challenge then was to coordinate them all in one day, move them efficiently from one transplant surgery to the next, and ensure Robert's safety. ,” Dr. Nolke said.
Robert won't be released from hospital until the end of August and says he's getting back to normal with each passing week.
“A big milestone for me was when the oxygen company came to remove all the oxygen equipment I needed and relied on. It felt great.”
He said his next goal is to get back in the gym in December and also feels eligible to take a trip overseas to visit friends.
