The husband of the Falkala woman who received her life-changing kidney transplant will begin a 240km cycle in Ireland next Wednesday, towing a dialysis machine to raise funds for the Irish Kidney Association.
Peter Con Boy, a barriger from Galway County, is married to Liz Ferry, who developed chronic kidney disease at the age of 13.
Liz became a patient at Temple Street Children's Hospital and endured peritoneal dialysis at home for a week, six nights a week, until the donor's kidneys became available a year later.
She underwent a life-changing kidney transplant at Beaumont Hospital in May 2002.
Next Wednesday, Peter will begin his life cycle nationwide from Temple Street Hospital and finish at the National Memorial Gardens for Sarutile's organ donor in Galway.
Along the way, he stops in the towns of Maynooth, Mullinger, Athlone, Ballinas Roe and Laflare, supporting his cause before the last foot of his journey, from Laflare to Galway on August 4th.
Unlike other long-distance charity rides, Galway Native tows dialysis machines provided by B. Brown.
Peter arrives in Saltil's iconic garden, his way of honoring the family of his Liz's donors who made the stunning decision to donate the organs of his loved ones 22 years ago and who admitted Liz to a successful long-term kidney transplant.
“This was the first chapter in Liz's new life, allowing her to earn her university degree, travel around the world, marry me and enjoy life in full.
Prior to her husband's marathon cycle, Liz said: “As a young teenager, it was incredibly tough to face an uncertain future with chronic kidney disease.
“The gift of the donor kidney has given me a future that most people take for granted. It allowed me to meet the love of my life and share a wonderful life with Peter.”
This extraordinary effort aims to gather the awareness and funds of the Irish Kidney Association (IKA) (through Peter's idolatry cycle of life) and spark conversations about the important importance of organ donation. www.idonate.ie/fundraiser/cycleflife
