Cork woman receives kidney transplant and gives birth to 'miraculous' baby in time for Mother's Day
Colette Ho, 37, and her partner Morgan Lyons, from Charleville, Co. Cork, recently gave birth to a baby girl.
Colette was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease (CKD) more than 10 years ago, but underwent a transplant in 2020.
Just two weeks before Mother's Day, at 34 weeks pregnant, Colette gave birth to a beautifully developed baby girl weighing 2 kg (4.41 lbs).
The proud parents named their little bundle Croix, an Irish name meaning “little heart.”
Colette expressed her heartfelt gratitude to the families of deceased organ donors, whose selflessness made the transplant possible.
“I am forever grateful to my donor and his family for giving me a second chance at life and the opportunity to become a mother. They left a wonderful legacy of the gift of life to me, my family and my current circle. ” Life continues with Croia. ”
She also thanked her nephrologist, Professor Liam Plant, who has been with her since her diagnosis.
She added: “Our baby is truly a miracle and we are filled with gratitude. For a long time, I was worried about whether my pregnancy would go well despite my kidney disease, and whether I would have to undergo dialysis or be on the waiting list for a transplant. I didn't know how long it would last.”
“Professor Plant was more than just a doctor to me, he was like a guardian angel. His retirement next week will mark the end of an era, but I will be forever grateful for his unwavering support. Croix currently holds the title of Professor.'' Plant was the last kidney child before her retirement and we are delighted that she has earned that special title. ”
