The family of an Abbey Grammar School pupil have made an urgent appeal for people to register as potential bone marrow donors after their son and brother were diagnosed with leukaemia.
Daniel Greer is just 14 years old and is also a member of the Irish Borders Orchestra. Last month he complained of back pain and bone pain. What happened a few days later is every parent's nightmare.
After blood tests and X-rays, he was admitted to the Royal Victoria Hospital where he was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), an aggressive blood cancer. His family have been told he needs a bone marrow transplant and are now in a race against time to find a suitable donor.
Daniel's family is urgently asking everyone who is able to register as a donor on the DKMS website to do so.
In a heartfelt plea with people to sign the register, his brother James said, “It only takes two minutes to register and receive your swab kit. It only takes five minutes to collect the swab sample.”
“You could be what Daniel needs! You can make a difference!! You could be someone on the other side of the world praying right now, hoping and hoping that you would be there to save their life.
“The bottom line is, in less than 10 minutes, and without even leaving your home, you could save someone's life. What are you waiting for? All we ask is that you take two minutes to register as a bone marrow or blood donor. You may never be called, but you could save up to seven lives. You can make a difference!! Please help Daniel!”
