Fundraising begins for baby girl in desperate need of bone marrow transplant

The grandmother of a seriously ill baby girl has launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise money for her granddaughter's life-saving bone marrow transplant.

Dennis Murphy has started a GoFundMe for his granddaughter Kayla. Kayla has had a difficult journey since birth, spending an entire month in a special care infant unit due to poor weight gain and feeding issues.

Kayla experienced oral aversion when she was 3 months old and as a result had a nasogastric tube inserted for nutritional support. Since then, Kayla has started visiting the hospital frequently.

In May this year, baby Kayla developed a serious infection and was taken to Crumlin Children's Hospital where she was diagnosed with a life-threatening condition. This condition is very rare and causes the baby's immune system to be suppressed.

Her condition is in a “precarious position” with high risks of dangerous infections, cancer, moral and moral issues, and she is in dire need of a bone marrow transplant.

Her family said, “If Kayla does not receive a transplant, her life expectancy will be even shorter.''

The baby's grandmother revealed on GoFundMe that her granddaughter has no treatment options in Ireland and may have to travel to the UK to receive life-saving treatment.

She said: “This treatment is not available in Ireland so Kayla will be receiving this treatment at the Great North Children's Hospital in Newcastle.” Kayla was born to her parents Kevin and Elisha on September 3. The baby will be taken to Great North Children's Hospital for a transplant evaluation. This evaluation will include a number of tests to see if Kayla is suitable for a transplant.

Kayla will then receive her due date in the coming weeks or months. Once a date has been decided, she will be admitted to a Newcastle hospital for the transplant, which will include chemotherapy, blood transfusions, transplantation and aftercare. ”

Kayla's treatment in Newcastle is expected to last several months and her family is appealing for support to help them cope with the financial burden of this devastating situation.
